KVJJ Rijnmond

KVJJ Rijnmond (Small-Scale Judicial Youth Facility Rijnmond) is a low-security facility where young people have to stay when they are awaiting their sentence or have been placed in a youth facility. The facility was established in 2022 and is located in Rotterdam. It is one of the five small-scale youth facilities in The Netherlands. KVJJ Rijnmond is managed by the Custodial Institutions Agency of The Netherlands in collaboration with a Dutch organisation named Timon.

about

Every resident in KVJJ Rijnmond has their own day program, where young people are encouraged to take responsibility for their personal pathways and where a leaning environment is created by trial and error that encourages motivation and responsibility. The principles of normalization and opportunity are the basis of the approach that the facility want to establish. This makes it possible for each resident to have a personal plan, with a goal of maintaining previous involvement in activities like school, work, sports or health care. This is possible since they are placed near their already existing network, to maintain ties to family and friends. There is also interaction between residents and the broader community thanks to this approach.

Mapped by the RESCALED-movement

Small-scale, differentiated and community-integrated facilities can be found in many European countries. There is not one, but a thousand detention houses. As part of the two-year WISH-EU Project, Prison Insider developed an interactive map that visualizes a database of detention facilities from various European regions. Throughout this European-funded project, we identified and visited over 40 good practices that apply one or more of the following principles: small-scale, differentiation and community-integration. Since then, RESCALED has continued to identify and visit practices whose stories can inspire us to drive systemic change. We have further developed the map to include various filters and detailed reports so you can get to know these inspirational practices!
