Transition House Mechelen

Transition House Mechelen

Transition House Mechelen has opened in 2019. The facility is managed by Sterkhuis, which is a partnership between G4S Care and Exodus Netherlands. It is the first facility that Sterkhuis is managing in Belgium. Transition House Mechelen welcomes individuals who are committed to actively engaging in their reintegration into society and the “Transition House” initiative. Therefore, those residing in the Transition House are referred to as “participants” rather than inmates.

about

The transition house uses three pillars to maximize their residents’ reintegration support, these are strength, recovery and connection. By focusing on these three pillars, participants feel that they do have useful skills, are able to repair harm and goals can be achieved. There is a neighborhood-oriented way of working, where residents take advantage of the regular offerings the municipality provides for everyone and can give something back to the community. In this way, there is community involvement and it can provide positive reintegration for residents.

Mapped by the RESCALED-movement

Small-scale, differentiated and community-integrated facilities can be found in many European countries. There is not one, but a thousand detention houses. As part of the two-year WISH-EU Project, Prison Insider developed an interactive map that visualizes a database of detention facilities from various European regions. Throughout this European-funded project, we identified and visited over 40 good practices that apply one or more of the following principles: small-scale, differentiation and community-integration. Since then, RESCALED has continued to identify and visit practices whose stories can inspire us to drive systemic change. We have further developed the map to include various filters and detailed reports so you can get to know these inspirational practices!
