DIFFERENTIATION

Youth Unit West is a mixed-gender facility for young people aged 15 to 18 years old from the beginning of their sentence. The main focus of Youth Unit West are juveniles who are dealing with unacceptable behavior in accordance with international law and conventions. In addition they have various, complex problems, need individual attention and have a risk of acting before thinking.

The facility places a strong emphasis on personalized and individualized programs, ensuring that each resident receives the support and education they need to reintegrate successfully into society. Residents have the possibility to partake in activities such as education, sports or cooking together. If possible, residents follow education outside of the facility.

COMMUNITY-INTEGRATION

Youth Unit West is based next to the Bjørgvin prison in a village, called Breistein. Residents can leave Youth Unit West for education purposes and some community health care services collaborate with the facility. Other than this, there is little to no interaction with the community, mostly because of the high level of security.
