Haparanda Prison

Haparanda Prison

Haparanda prison is a medium security prison and located in Haparanda, Sweden. The prison was founded in 1888 but has been refurbished many times since then. It falls under the jurisdiction of the Swedish prison and probation service, also known as Kriminalvården. Their vision is to bring change and not only provide secure custody. They want to encourage the resident to live a better life after serving their sentence.

about

Residents have to spend twelve hours in their rooms and the other twelve hours are for activities, these take place in the facility and residents have no control over their own schedule. There are also work opportunities at Haparanda Prison, the facility has a wood industry where various things can be made. Work is not mandatory but the facility will occasionally write a letter of recommendation for a resident based on work done at the prison. In their free time, residents are allowed to receive visits from family or friends but don’t get frequent visits because of a limited number of allowed visits and the prison’s remote location. However, residents can go on leave to visit family. A therapy dog was recently introduced in Haparanda Prison. This is a pioneering initiative in the Swedish prison system in which specially trained dogs provide emotional support and companionship to people in detention during 30-minute sessions. Both staff and residents find support and comfort in the presence of the dogs.

Visited during the wish-eu project

Small-scale, differentiated and community-integrated facilities can be found in many European countries. There is not one, but a thousand detention houses. As part of the two-year WISH-EU Project, Prison Insider developed an interactive map that visualizes a database of detention facilities from various European regions. Throughout this European-funded project, we identified and visited over 40 good practices that apply one or more of the following principles: small-scale, differentiation and community-integration. Since then, RESCALED has continued to identify and visit practices whose stories can inspire us to drive systemic change. We have further developed the map to include various filters and detailed reports so you can get to know these inspirational practices!
