La Ferme de Moyembrie

La Ferme de Moyembrie, located in Coucy-le-Château-Auffrique, about two hours from Paris, is an agro-ecological farm. In 1990, Jacques and Geneviève Pluvinage, retired agricultural engineers, bought a 24-acre plot of land to create a refuge for marginalized people. Jacques, who also visited local prisons, began receiving letters from prisoners who needed help after their release. The Pluvinages welcomed these people and shared their homes and work. In the early 2000s, a judge recognized their efforts, and in 2004, agreements with Reintegration Prison Services allowed them to officially host inmates and help them prepare for reintegration into society. La ferme de Moyembrie was the first agro-ecological farn in France for incarcerated individuals, after which several more opened, such as Ferme Ker de Madeleine and Ferme Emmaüs Baudonne.

DIFFERENTIATION

Ferme de Moyembrie primarily supports men aged 25 years or older who are in the final phase of their sentence, typically within 6 months to a year before release. The key criterion for selection is the individual’s genuine interest in breaking the cycle of crime and demonstrating a willingness to change, with the final decision made by a penalty enforcement judge.

At Ferme de Moyembrie, the weekly schedule consists of structured work in the mornings from 8 a.m. to noon, while afternoons are left free for residents to schedule their own time, participate in activities such as riding lessons, courses or reconnect with loved ones. Meals are shared, breakfast and lunch are served communally, while dinner can be enjoyed with the community or individually; evening activities such as sports or local outings are also offered on a voluntary basis.

COMMUNITY-INTEGRATION

Ferme de Moyembrie has prioritized community integration from the beginning, with founders Jacque and Geneviève maintaining strong ties with local authorities to address society’s concerns about former incarcerated people. By involving residents in local economic activities and social events, the community gradually deconstructs fears and negative stereotypes through personal interactions and shared experiences. The active participation of the local mayor and his wife is a further example of deep integration as they support the reintegration of residents both personally and within the broader community.
