Ferme Emmaüs de Ker Madeleine

Ferme Emmaüs de Ker Madeleine is an agroecological farm located in Saint-Gildas-des-Bois. It is part of the Emmaüs Movement. One of the goals of the Emmaüs movement is to have a farm in every region of France. Ferme de Ker Madeleine is located in the Loire-Atlantique region. It is owned by Sources d’Envol and was established in 2021. The facility is licensed by the prison administration of France. It is called “placement extérieur”, which refers in Ferme de Ker Madeleine to a fixed-term labor integration contract. The aim is to create a place where people at the end of their sentences have the chance to readjust and rebuild their lives before they are released.

SMALL-SCALE

Ferme de Ker Madeleine currently has the capacity to accommodate six residents, with an additional room available for individuals on temporary leave. Although, there are plans in place to expand the farm within a maximum of two years. Once the construction work is completed, the farm will be able to accommodate a total of thirteen residents.

DIFFERENTIATION

Ferme de Ker Madeleine focuses on adult men while at the same time striving for an intergenerational mix within the facility. The decision is made on a case-by-case basis. Other placement criteria include qualifying for the outside placement regime and having enough remaining sentence to spend a minimum of six months on the farm before the release date.

At Ferme de Ker Madeleine there is a weekly schedule in which the residents can schedule all types of appointments, in- or outside the facility, when they are not working. They do need an authorisation from the staff but this is only necessary for logistical reasons. Work forms an essential part of the daily schedule in the farm. It is mandatory for the residents to work 26 hours per week. They are paid the French minimum wage, which is 11.52€ per hour (as of May 2023). With this wage, residents are able to cover the monthly farm rent, which costs 380€ per month.

COMMUNITY-INTEGRATION

Ferme de Ker Madeleine is located in a community, but has had some problems interacting with the community. This is something that other facilities of the Emmaus movement also struggled with in the beginning. Yet their best to gradually increase interaction with the community by organizing an open day. Selling farm products also plays a role in attracting people from the community. Over time, local people seem to show more interest in the project and interaction increases. In addition volunteers are involved in the facility. They drive residents to appointments and participate in activities.
