NGO White Estonia

NGO White Estonia (in Estonian: MTÜ Valge Eesti) was founded in 2005 and is dedicated to supporting former convicts and individuals struggling with addiction, helping them on their path to rehabilitation and reintegration into society. It provides structured support for those on early release or individuals who have been granted an alternative penalty, allowing them to serve their sentence in a rehabilitation program instead of a traditional prison setting.

NGO White Estonia was founded on the belief that the prison system alone is not enough to ensure lasting change. Many individuals struggle upon release, lacking both a safe place to stay and a support network to guide them toward a stable life. Olavi, the founder, saw this gap and took action, creating a facility that helps individuals transition successfully, avoid setbacks, and reintegrate into society.

SMALL-SCALE

NGO White Estonia is a small-scale facility with a maximum capacity of twenty residents. The facility itself consists of one building, with private bedrooms, bathrooms and toilets for each resident. There are shared spaces, such as a kitchen, living room, garden and common areas dedicated to education, workshops and leisure activities.

DIFFERENTIATION

NGO White Estonia targets men and women who need support in resocialization after their prison sentence. The facility is open to people 21 and older. An important condition for staying in this facility is that the person must be a resident of Tartumaa. This is because residents must have a connection to the community in which they will be reintegrating. The program is tailored for people determined to change, particularly those struggling with addiction and seeking a safe and structured environment to rebuild their lives after completing their sentences.

At NGO White Estonia, the residents’ activities are structured to support their rehabilitation while gradually increasing their autonomy as they progress. The facility applies the principles of ADL (Activity of Daily Living) and normality, encouraging residents to develop life skills and attend courses to improve their qualifications for the job market.

COMMUNITY-INTEGRATION

Residents of NGO White Estonia go into the community for work, voluntary work, education, or sports, creating many opportunities for interaction with local people. They use regular services available in the community, helping them integrate into everyday life. The facility collaborates with several local organizations, including Toidupank, which distributes food aid, and Sõbralt Sõbrale, a second-hand clothes store. Residents assist staff at a local kindergarten with lawn mowing, leaf raking, and other outdoor tasks. They also support a nearby nursing home by helping with physical tasks and lend a hand at the second-hand store by unloading goods. These activities help build positive relationships with the community while giving residents a sense of responsibility and purpose in their rehabilitation journey.
