Exodus Utrecht (Waalstraat)

Exodus Utrecht (Waalstraat)

Exodus Utrecht Waalstraat (from now on “Exodus Waalstraat”) is located in Utrecht and is part of the NGO called “Stichting Exodus Nederland”. This organization was founded in 1979, with their mission to have a safe society where people can build a meaningful life with new opportunities. The Exodus organization offers various services for people in detention and people who have been in detention. In function of these services, there are eleven houses spread over the Netherlands and focuses primarily on participants who still need significant support during the final stages of their detention or after their release.

about

Exodus Waalstraat works according to the ‘Your Power’ methodology, which places a strong emphasis on the strengths of each participant that are assessed at the beginning of the program. By guiding participants toward their own recovery, engagement and motivation are fostered to help them rebuild their lives. A mentor plays a crucial role in overseeing the process, providing guidance and offering assistance as needed. Building a meaningful daily routine is an essential part for a successful reintegration into society and if the routine doesn’t exists yet, then Exodus offers support to participants in identifying their unique qualities and interests to work toward a fulfilling and purposeful life. The residents are also actively engaged in work or outside activities so they have constant interaction with the community and is an inherent and natural part of their routine.

Visited during the wish-eu project

Small-scale, differentiated and community-integrated facilities can be found in many European countries. There is not one, but a thousand detention houses. As part of the two-year WISH-EU Project, Prison Insider developed an interactive map that visualizes a database of detention facilities from various European regions. Throughout this European-funded project, we identified and visited over 40 good practices that apply one or more of the following principles: small-scale, differentiation and community-integration. Since then, RESCALED has continued to identify and visit practices whose stories can inspire us to drive systemic change. We have further developed the map to include various filters and detailed reports so you can get to know these inspirational practices!
