Bella Centre

Bella Centre

Bella Center is one of two Community Custody Units (CCU’s), located in Dundee, and was founded in 2022. CCU’s are small-scale detention facilities tailored to support the needs of women in custody through a gender-specific and trauma-informed approach. Seamlessly integrated into local communities, these units provide safe accommodation to meet the needs of women seeking closer ties to their communities and access to essential services. The overarching goal is to promote independence to facilitate a smooth transition to society after incarceration.

The CCUs are designed to promote and support independent living, with the women expected to maintain their personal and communal living spaces. The women are also responsible for managing their own time; they do this by planning ahead and communicating with their caseworker if there are scheduling conflicts. Doing this allows a person to move up and gain more access to the community, such as unescorted leave. The CCUs also offer more open facilities for family visits, making it more child and family friendly, and family contacts are strongly encouraged here.

As part of the two-year WISH-EU Project, Prison Insider developed an interactive map that visualizes a database of detention facilities from various European regions. Throughout this European-funded project, we identified and visited over 40 good practices that apply one or more of the following principles: small-scale, differentiation and community-integration. Since then, RESCALED has continued to identify and visit practices whose stories can inspire us to drive systemic change. We have further developed the map to include various filters and detailed reports so you can get to know these inspirational practices!
