Florești Penitentiary

The Ploieşti prison is located in Ploieşti (Romania), it houses 395 people and accommodates male adults after conviction in semi-open and open regimes. In October 2022, the Ploieşti Prison began a new open program, which is located at a different place, called Floreşti. The project is known as “Work point with permanent accommodation for incarcerated persons – Floreşti, Prahova” (“Floreşti facility” from now on). This program is a mix between a prison and a halfway house and cooperates with a private partner who provides accommodation in exchange for work done by residents for the company.

The residents of the Floreşti facility all have to work so few activities are offered, they are also expected to do housekeeping in the common areas and their shared rooms. The residents have some control over their own activities but the program is still experimental. The schedule is usually determined by the correctional facility. Residents may receive visits from their families in another nearby ward as the institution is not yet equipped with the necessary rooms. The interaction with the local community is also not on the rails, since there is almost nothing implemented in the Floreşti facility in this regard, except visits to the community or local employment agencies.
