Casa Madre della Riconciliazione

Casa Madre della Riconciliazione

Casa Madre della Riconciliazione is a detention facility and farm located in Saludecio, Italy, and was founded in 2011. The facility is an integral part of the APG Association, known as the “Associazione Comunità Papa Giovanni XXIII”. The APG Association has an international presence and operates as a religious institution with a practical and constant commitment to fighting marginalization and poverty. Their houses are unique in that they create an environment where people in detention live with a wide variety of individuals, including people who have served their sentences and those struggling with mental disabilities. Following the positive results of Casa Madre del Perdono, Casa Madre della Riconciliazione opened in 2011.

about

At the heart of the Casa Madre della Riconciliazione is the CEC model, which stands for “Educating community with People Sentenced to Prison.”, and revolves around recognizing the inevitability of punitive measures but more importantly, of recovery. The facility develops a comprehensive program aimed at educating people in detention in three phases. In a first phase, the resident focuses on self-reflection and in the next phase, there will be an emphasis on job training and professionalization. At last, the program provides a navigation through gradual exploration of increased autonomy, freedom and reintegration into society. The duration of the phases depends on the committed crime and the characteristics of the individual. The local community actively participates through volunteering in the Casa and making donations, more interaction is also achieved by coordinating communal gatherings.

Visited during the wish-eu project

Small-scale, differentiated and community-integrated facilities can be found in many European countries. There is not one, but a thousand detention houses. As part of the two-year WISH-EU Project, Prison Insider developed an interactive map that visualizes a database of detention facilities from various European regions. Throughout this European-funded project, we identified and visited over 40 good practices that apply one or more of the following principles: small-scale, differentiation and community-integration. Since then, RESCALED has continued to identify and visit practices whose stories can inspire us to drive systemic change. We have further developed the map to include various filters and detailed reports so you can get to know these inspirational practices!
